Exhibition SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE to be shown in Cologne for the first time
Modern pool architecture in the spotlight
As part of aquanale, the International Trade Fair for Sauna.Pool.Ambience, the Stuttgart-based architects’ practice 4a Architekten will present the exhibition SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE in Cologne from 28 to 31 October 2025. Having appeared at the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin and the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, the exhibition will once again reach a broad audience when it is displayed at the event in Cologne.SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE presents thirteen selected projects from the firm’s portfolio. They include the Hallenbad Oppenheim indoor pool, the Kombibad Hirschbach combined indoor and outdoor pool in Aalen, and the thermal baths Mineralbad Berg in Stuttgart, Therme Lindau on the shores of Lake Constance and Emser Therme in Bad Ems. Also featured in the exhibition are the Freizeitbad Stegermatt leisure pool in Offenburg and the Therme Wien thermal baths in Vienna.
Drawing on models, plans and photos, the exhibits convey the complexity and many different facets of contemporary swimming pool construction – from school pools to thermal baths, from sports facilities to wellness centres, from energy self-sufficient swimming pools to the first indoor pool built in modular timber construction. Each exhibit focuses on a key element of swimming pool architecture. Short video statements provide insights into the architects’ reflections during the design process and how they create a sense of atmosphere, as well as revealing which aspects are crucial to cost-efficiency and sustainability.
4a Architekten: Creating architecture for people
Founded in 1990, the Stuttgart-based architects’ practice 4a Architekten creates atmospheric pools in which function and design go hand in hand – whether they are for schools, sports or wellness. With their feel for space, materials, light and colour, the architects produce places that are invitations to both engage in sporting activity and to relax. The exhibition SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE – curated in collaboration with OUP Visual Communication – now offers an impressive insight into the firm’s work.
New additions for 2025: the Digital Waterpark and Sauna from Finland special events
Alongside the exhibition by 4a Architekten, two highly topical special formats are lined up for visitors at aquanale 2025:
The European Waterpark Association (EWA) is launching the Digital Waterpark special event. This showcase of groundbreaking technologies will cover innovations such as intelligent control systems, automated maintenance solutions, data-based visitor management systems and interactive digital experiences for visitors. The special event sets out to demonstrate how digitalisation can contribute to efficiency improvements, sustainability and an enhanced visitor experience. It will place a special focus on solutions that have already proven successful in real-world operation. The Digital Waterpark special event is aimed at operators, planners and investors who are interested in the digital future of leisure pools.
In addition, an internationally renowned initiative will be represented at aquanale thanks to the participation of Sauna from Finland. The network’s mission is to communicate the holistic ethos that underpins the original Finnish sauna culture. Featuring a lounge and installations, the inspiring special event will have experts from Finland on hand to help demonstrate what makes an authentic, high-quality sauna experience. Visitors will be able to explore everything from design and materials to löyly rituals – the practice of throwing water onto a hot stove to produce steam – as well as lighting concepts and sound effects. Quality, health, mindfulness and creating a welcoming experience for sauna visitors will be key areas of focus at the special event. Sauna from Finland is a network of suppliers, brands and planners who want to further enhance the sauna experience as part of a modern understanding of well-being.
Both special events will underscore the high level of innovation and diversity of topics presented at aquanale 2025 – and offer trade visitors new perspectives on the future of the wellness, sauna and leisure industry.

Ausstellung „SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE“ erstmals zu Gast in Köln
Moderne Bäderarchitektur im Fokus
Im Rahmen der aquanale, Internationale Fachmesse für Sauna.Pool.Ambiente., präsentiert das Stuttgarter Architekturbüro 4a Architekten vom 28. bis 31. Oktober 2025 die Ausstellung „SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE“ in Köln. Nach Stationen im Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin und an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart wird die Schau damit erneut einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht.Gezeigt werden dreizehn ausgewählte Projekte aus dem Portfolio des Büros – darunter das Hallenbad Oppenheim, das Kombibad Hirschbach in Aalen, das Mineralbad Berg in Stuttgart, die Therme Lindau am Bodensee, die Emser Therme in Bad Ems, das Freizeitbad Stegermatt in Offenburg, die Therme Wien sowie weitere Beispiele.
Anhand von Modellen, Plänen und Fotos vermitteln die Objekte die Vielschichtigkeit und den Facettenreichtum des zeitgenössischen Bäderbaus – vom Schulbad bis zur Therme, vom Sportbad bis zur Wellnessanlage, vom energieautarken Schwimmbad bis hin zum ersten Hallenbad in Holzmodulbauweise. Im Mittelpunkt steht jeweils ein zentrales Schlüsselelement der Schwimmbadarchitektur. Kurze Video-Statements geben zudem Einblicke in die gestalterischen Überlegungen des Büros, zeigen, wie Atmosphäre geschaffen wird und welche Aspekte für Wirtschaftlichkeit und Nachhaltigkeit von Bedeutung sind.
4a Architekten: Architektur für Menschen
Seit 1990 gestalten die Stuttgarter 4a Architekten atmosphärische Bäder, in denen Funktion und Gestaltung Hand in Hand gehen – vom Schul- über das Sport- bis zum Wellnessbad. Mit viel Gespür für Raum, Material, Licht und Farbe entstehen Orte, die sowohl zum Aktivsein als auch zur Erholung einladen. Die Ausstellung „SWIMMING IN ATMOSPHERE“, die in Zusammenarbeit mit OUP Visual Communication entstanden ist, gibt nun eindrucksvoll Einblick in die Arbeit des Büros.
Neu 2025: Sonderschauen „Digital Waterpark“ und „Sauna from Finland“
Neben der Ausstellung der 4a Architekten erwarten Besucher:innen auf der aquanale 2025 zwei thematisch hochaktuelle Sonderformate:
Die European Waterpark Association (EWA) bringt mit dem „Digital Waterpark“ eine neue Sonderschau an den Start, die digitale Innovationen für Wasserparks und Erlebnisbäder greifbar macht. Präsentiert werden zukunftsweisende Technologien wie intelligente Steuerungssysteme, automatisierte Wartungslösungen, datengestützte Besuchermanagementsysteme und interaktive digitale Erlebnisse für Gäste. Ziel ist es, aufzuzeigen, wie Digitalisierung zur Effizienzsteigerung, Nachhaltigkeit und verbesserten Gästeerfahrung beiträgt – und welche Lösungen bereits erfolgreich in der Praxis eingesetzt werden. Die Sonderschau richtet sich an Betreiber, Planer und Investoren, die sich für die digitale Zukunft der Freizeitbäder interessieren.
Mit „Sauna from Finland“ ist zudem eine international renommierte Initiative auf der aquanale vertreten, die das ganzheitliche Konzept der original finnischen Saunakultur vermittelt. In einer inspirierenden Sonderschau mit Lounge, Inszenierungen und Expert:innen aus Finnland wird gezeigt, was eine authentische, hochwertige Sauna Experience ausmacht – von Design und Materialien über Aufgusszeremonien bis hin zu Licht- und Klangkonzepten. Dabei stehen Qualität, Gesundheit, Achtsamkeit und Gastfreundschaft im Fokus. „Sauna from Finland“ vernetzt Anbieter, Marken und Planende, die die Saunaerfahrung als Teil moderner Wellbeing-Konzepte weiterentwickeln wollen.
Beide Sonderschauen unterstreichen den hohen Innovationsgrad und die thematische Vielfalt der aquanale 2025 – und bieten Fachbesucher:innen neue Perspektiven auf die Zukunft der Wellness-, Sauna- und Freizeitbranche.
